Lake Braddock junior was joined on the MVP lacrosse trip to Ireland by her mother

WASHINGTON – It was a few years ago that Summer Eastman first heard about a possible lacrosse trip to Ireland.
Then around Thanksgiving of last year the possibility resurfaced.
“Wow, this could actually happen,” Eastman recalls thinking.
Dreams became reality last month when the MVP International girls’ lacrosse team spent about 10 days in Ireland.
The squad, made up of players from five high schools in Virginia, went 9-0 and won its division at a lacrosse festival in Limerick. It was the first trip outside of North America for Eastman.
But it was also sightseeing events off the pitch that made the trip memorable. The festival was held in conjunction with the 21U world championships for men, which was won by the U.S. national team.
“Getting to go through the whole experience, and meeting the USA mens’ team, was just amazing,” says Eastman, a midfielder from Lake Braddock High in Burke, Virginia.
“The people that mean the most to me, I got to do cool things alongside of them,” she adds. “That was really special.”
The MVP International team went 9-0 among Irish teams and one other American squad.
“Some of the teams we played, there was a significant difference (in level of play) between them and us,” Eastman notes. “We had to work together on the skill level we were playing against.”
Off the pitch, the MVP International group was able to take a walking tour of Dublin, visit a castle, sample traditional Irish food and learn about the Gaelic Games.
“The Gaelic Games was really fun. We got to learn about the history of Irish sports. Getting to play them was quite funny; we went into thinking we would be really good at it but in reality we were not at all,” she says.
Eastman comes from a family of lacrosse players.
Her younger brother and sister play the sport.
Her mother, Christina, played lacrosse at Hayfield High School and her father, Todd, played at Robinson High, also in Virginia.
Eastman’s parents had been to Ireland about 13 years to celebrate the birthday of her father.
This time, her mother went with the MVP International team to Ireland.
Other members of the MVP International team included middies Natalie Anderson and Madelyn Arca; attacks Erin Soule, Ann Suddarth, Claire Varley, Mia Young, Julia Lundy, Emma Lundy, and Ashlynn Maher; defenders Caleigh Jones and Ellie Suddarth; and goalies Bristol Sine and Hannah Smith.
They represent these Northern Virginia high schools: Lake Braddock (five players), Robinson (four), Bishop O’Connell (three) in Arlington, and one each from West Springfield and W.T. Woodson, both in Fairfax County.
Coaches for the MVP International team were Tim Prosser, the coach of the girls’ team at Robinson High in Fairfax, Virginia, and TJ Finnerty, the new girls’ lacrosse coach at the Flint High School in Oakton, Virginia. Both are coaches with Virginia One Girls Lacrosse in which nearly every MVP player from the Ireland trip is involved.
Much of the legwork before the trip was done by Anthony Neville, who is from the Cork area of Ireland and has been involved in lacrosse for several years.
“The trip was phenomenal. While we were there, we were able to see the Cliff of Moher, do a walking tour of Dublin and Limerick, participate in a Gaelic games experience and we got to see the U21 USA Lacrosse team win the Gold Medal at the World Lacrosse Championships,” said Matt Wojciechowski, the Regional Enrollment Coordinator for MVP International.
Eastman has advice for those considering such a trip with MVP International, a leader in overseas youth travel.
“Do it. It is very rare you get that opportunity again and it is something that will stay with you for the rest of your life,” she says.
