Two Memorable MVP Trips For Polymeropoulos

Catcher went to Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic; now part of the new program at Richard Bland

WASHINGTON – It was nearly four years ago, but the memories of a cookout on a beach in the Dominican Republic still linger for Chris Polymeropoulos.

A standout at James Madison High in Virginia, Polymeropoulos made his first trip with MVP International to the Dominican in 2018.

“That was probably the most memorable thing from the DR trip,” he said of that Bar-B-Q. “We played the day of, and after the game, we went to the beach and had a cookout. It was really amazing; they were showing us some of the games they played on the beach and we were showing. Them games we played on the beach; stickball is a big thing in the DR.”

“I think the best part was we wanted to speak Spanish with them and they wanted to speak English with us,” Polymeropoulos added. “It was pretty cool to break that language barrier and talk with them and chat with them.

“The DR really opened my eyes to how the players play there and how they are living. Everyone would come out to the games. The whole town would come out and watch. It was such a great experience.”

It was such a great experience that Polymeropoulos, who just finished his first season at Richard Bland of William & Mary, went with MVP International to Puerto Rico in 2019.

“If you play baseball, you know the DR, Puerto Rico, it is a great place for baseball,” Polymeropoulos said. “Both trips were such incredible experiences, it was a lot of fun.”

Before making his first trip, the Virginia resident consulted with Kyle Novak and his family, as they made several trips with MVP International. This past spring, Novak was a hitting standout for James Madison University and led the Colonial Athletic Association in RBI.

“The teams we brought down to both places were phenomenal and the competition was great,” noted Polymeropoulos, who graduated from Madison High in 2020.

His parents went on both trips and his sister was also part of the MVP excursion to Puerto Rico.

Another player with MVP International on that trip to the Dominican was Tucker Mitchell, now a catcher in the minor league system of the Texas Rangers. Mitchell was drafted in the 14th round by the Rangers last year out of the State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota.

Josh Gjormand and Fitzpatrick Halloran, also Madison High alums, also were part of the Puerto Rico trips. They were both part of the University of Lynchburg baseball team that advanced to the Division III national tournament this past season.

This fall, Polymeropoulos will begin his second season with the baseball program at Richard Bland – a two-year residential program in South Prince George, Virginia that fielded a team for the first time in 2022.

A catcher/infielder, Polymeropoulos hit .329 with two homers, 14 RBI, and 21 runs scored as a freshman this past season after transferring from Roanoke.

“I think we made a lot of progress by the end of the year,” he said. “I am excited for this next year.”

The head coach for the Statesmen is John Fletcher, who won 258 games and took his team to playoffs 17 of 19 years as a high school coach at Mills Goodwin, J.R. Tucker and Manchester.

“Richard Bland College is excited to place the inaugural baseball program in the capable hands of John Fletcher,” athletic director Scott Newton said in a statement when Fletcher was hired. “His success at the high school level serves as the foundation for building the RBC program from the ground up, which includes recruiting the type of student-athletes that will thrive academically and athletically.”

“He is a great coach,” Polymeropoulos said of Fletcher.

An assistant coach at Richard Bland is Ryan Tierney, the former pitching coach at Eastern Mennonite University and a former coach in the Valley Baseball League with Harrisonburg and Front Royal. Trevor Gjormand, the son of MVP International Founder Mark “Pudge” Gjormand, plans to join the EMU baseball program after graduating from Madison High in 2023.

Polymeropoulos played for coach Gjormand at Madison High and on the two international trips.
