MVP International hockey teams returns from Sweden, Denmark
By David Driver, MVP Communications

WASHINGTON – The wait was worth it for MVP International, which recently sent three youth hockey teams to Europe.

“It took us three years to get back to Sweden and Denmark and they were ever better than I remember it,” Eli Facenda, the Chief Enrollment Officer of MVP International, said of the 10-day trip to Europe that ended earlier this month.

“The families had a blast, the players developed on the ice and new friendships and memories were created. It was a very successful trip,” added Facenda, who was part of the group.

Under the guidance of Hockey Director/GM Simon Roberts, three teams of 17 players each made the trip. Counting family members, he estimated about 125 people were part of the tour to Sweden and Denmark. The MVP teams were 13U, 15U and 16U.

Roberts said the trip aided the development of USA players as a way to complement the instruction they receive with their club coaches in this country.

“The Swedes are known for simplifying the game,” noted Roberts, adding that more than two dozen players out of Sweden were taken in the recent NHL draft.

There were MVP players and family members on the August trip from New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia.

The tour began in Copenhagen and on the second day players and their families were able to visit canals and castles.

“It was great to get back; people were ready to get out,” Roberts said.

After that, it was on to southern Sweden and a chance to work with coaches from a top hockey league in that country.

“They provided a day of player development – on ice, off ice, strength training, and overall general hockey instructions from professional coaches from that organization,” Roberts added.

And when it comes to hockey, learning the game from Swedish coaches can only aid young players.

“On a per capita basis, Sweden puts out the highest number of players in the NHL,” Roberts noted.

Roberts said the chance to learn from other coaches helps make a well-rounded young player. Each MVP International team was able to play five games each against local clubs in their age bracket.

“I think No. 1, it reinforces the message from their home teach coach,” Roberts said. “It is not just one coach – it is a collective approach. The Swedes are really methodical and they don’t mind repeating one practice on one certain topic.”

In addition to Roberts, who has decades of coaching experience, other instructors on the trip with MVP International came from youth clubs from Pittsburgh to Long Island to Team Maryland.

Other staff that made the trip was Brennan Cassidy, MVP International Athletics Enrollment Director.

“At the end of the day we wanted to develop, through a hockey lens, a player development experience through the Swedish training model that is unique in the development of their career,” Roberts noted. “It is not that the USA Hockey model is wrong – you just need multiple inputs to become a better player. Not one coach can give all of the instruction that a player needs to grow.”

A trip to Europe can aid youth instruction in the USA, he said.

“We feel the player comes back a better player,” adds Roberts, a long-time resident of Virginia. “They come into their home season, which starts now, having done 10 days of practices and games in Europe and they are better prepared when they come home.”

Roberts is hoping MVP International can offer three hockey trips in 2023.

“I spent the bulk of the plane ride home putting together the itinerary for Sweden next year and also for Germany, Austria and Switzerland and we are also looking at a Germany/Czech trip as well,” he said.
